Daily drawings of sunspot groups can be used to monitor their evolution (change in shape and appearance) as they move across the Sun’s disc. Remember a single spot is also a group. Groups can also be classified according to the system in Chap. 3 (Table 3.1) or any other classification system. Take care to record differences between penumbra and the umbra of sunspots. Also note the location of any bright patches or faculae. A red/orange filter in the eyepiece is sometimes useful when counting sunspots, while a blue filter is often useful for observing faculae and granulation. Astronomical societies have sections for solar observing – it is best to join one of these and work in with other amateurs (you also learn a lot from experienced people) (Fig. 6.3).
